ZOLL AED PRO Review

ZOLL AED PRO Overview

Cost: 3/5
Features: 10/10
Total cost of Ownership (lower is better): 4/10

Big brother of the ZOLL AED PLUS, the ZOLL AED PRO takes a step up to professional level ALS functionality.  Among the best AEDs on the market, the ZOLL AED PRO gets high marks in every area, making it an excellent choice. While it is on the high end when it comes to pricing, it provides features that make it function at the level of many non-portable hospital devices.  Its versatility, ruggedness (IP 55), and outstanding features make it well worth considering for most any buyer, whether a lay user or a professional first responder.

Like its little brother, the ZOLL AED Plus, it offers “CPR Help” with guidance for Basic Life Support (BLS) rescuers while also having advanced capabilities for the Advanced Life Support (ALS) professional. Unlike the AED PLUS, however, with its advanced features comes the requirement of a proprietary battery pack, in non-rechargeable or rechargeable form.

The ZOLL AED has behind it a long history of development by the original experts in the field of electrical heart monitoring and stimulation for the purposes of defibrillation and pacing. ZOLL Medical, producer of ZOLL AEDs, was founded by Dr. Paul M. Zoll and associates in 1980. Zoll, while Chief of the Cardiac Clinic at Beth Israel Hospital in 1952, demonstrated that “external electrical stimulation of a patient's chest during cardiac arrest can produce an effective heartbeat.”

A ZOLL AED PRO unit can be purchased with various features and accessories depending on its primary intended use. While the AED PRO is listed by ZOLL among its models made for “Public Access Defibrillation”, its high quality and available options make it a candidate for professional use, not just occasional use at one site typical of public units. Features that make the ZOLL AED PRO a candidate for professionals include but are not limited to:

  • It is made to stand up to being transported and used in rugged conditions (carried by area security officers, at sporting events, out backpacking, boating, etc.). It is made of the same material (Polycarbonate Siloxane) used to make professional football helmets!

  • It has an IP (“Ingress Protection”) rating of 55, the same high standard as professional use models/brands. Thus  it can withstand dust, moisture, and extremes in temperature, altitude, vibration and impact, passing the 1.5 meter drop test.

  • Emphasizing the likelihood that it will be purchased for portability and more frequent use, a carrying case is included for easy travel. Additional hard-shell carrying case is available and raises protection to IP 67.

ZOLL AED Pro Standout Features

ZOLL’s roots in the field of medical research and technological development show up strongly in features that hit at the core needs of first responders, shown below. The first features shown are included in both the ZOLL “Plus” and “Pro” models, progressing to those available on the “Pro” model only.

The fact is, according to the American Heart Association, “CPR plus early defibrillation can more than double the rate of survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest” (2015 AHA Guidelines).

ZOLL made its AEDs to provide more assistance to those performing CPR than just giving an electric shock, stepping out ahead of the competition with the addition of its “CPR-D Padz” and “Real CPR Help” technologies.

Health care professionals as well as lay responders benefit from assistance in knowing where, how often and how hard to push to meet current guidelines for chest compression rate and depth. First-aiders are guided through quick and proper placement of the electrodes and shown where to give compressions, then given specific real-time feedback regarding proper rate and chest pressure for those compressions. Rescuers receive audio and visual feedback that guides them to deliver high-quality CPR. See  “Real CPR Help” technology in action in this online demo.

More Features

Several features and available options make the AED PRO an outstanding choice for lay or professional use:

  • Semi-automatic or manual shock mode. The semi-automatic mode requires the rescuer to press a button upon prompting from the machine. The professional user may choose the semi-automatic or the manual feature to ensure full control of the shock function while attempting a rescue. Manual mode gives the rescuer absolute control of the shock function.

  • ”Pedi-padz” pediatric electrodes can be purchased in addition to standard CPR-D pads, providing “intelligent pediatric capability” for use with children up to 8 yrs/55 lbs. This choice benefits both the lay and professional first-aid providers.  Purchase of the Pedi-padz adapts the AED plus to installation and use in day-care facilities and schools with young children. The professional can carry both sizes and types of pads (CPR-D or Standard traditional 2-piece ZOLL® stat•padz™ II) for use as needed.

  • Steps for use are easily understood and follow the American Heart Association’s “Chain of Survival. There are both visual icons and audio prompts which go above and beyond what is needed for effective use, including the best CPR guidance https://www.zoll.com/medical-technology/cpr this blogger has found. In the PRO model, even the audio prompts can be adjusted.

  • See-Thru CPR® technology filters out compression artifacts on the ECG monitor so advanced rescuers can see the underlying heart rhythm during CPR.

  • Three-lead monitoring offers flexibility in monitoring, analyzing, and delivering treatment.

  • Large memory capacity: 20 minutes of ECG, operator, and device actions with audio recording enabled; 4 patient records up to 1.45 hours each, or up to 5.8 hours for a single record of ECG and event data without audio recording.

  • When a shock is needed, ZOLL provides more current and more proven defibrillation efficacy with its Rectilinear Biphasic waveform (RBW) than leading competitors.

  • ZOLL Administration Software: Zoll PRO’s configuration can be manually adjusted:
    • Softkey patient analysis during CPR period
    • Set CPR duration from 30 secs to indefinite
    • Can be set to “start CPR” or analyze patient at unit start-up
    • Adjustable voice prompts, including on/off (text prompts always show)
    • Adjustable shock energy in semi-automatic adult and pediatric modes

Other ZOLL AED PRO Reviews

The following reviews were taken from around the web and highlight other views on the AED Pro.

Mike Carlin, EMT

The ZOLL AED Pro builds on the impressive Plus platform, but adds features needed by trained professionals. The Pro is ideal for monitoring via ECG cable and showing heart rate, shocks delivered, and CPR compression depth. In order to provide quality CPR, the Pro provides feedback to both professionals and lay rescuers with the CPR Help feature. The AED is available as semi-automatic or fully automatic with manual override for ALS professionals. If you’ve used ZOLL devices on an ambulance or in a hospital, you will definitely appreciate the breadth of features and functionality on this device!

ZOLL AED PRO FAQs

How long do ZOLL AED Pro Batteries Last?

The Zoll AED PRO, unlike the AED Plus, requires a proprietary battery pack:

  • Non-rechargeable: recommended for rarely used AEDs, lasts approximately 4 years if unused.

  • Rechargeable: requires the Zoll Surepower (4-bay) Defibrillator Battery System, designed for professional use. Both the charger (approx $2400) and the batteries (approx $450) are very expensive. They are designed for repeated us, have long life but more importantly incorporate a “run-time” feature so they can be maintained in the charger with clear indication of their readiness for  use.

How Much Does the ZOLL AED PRO Cost?

The ZOLL AED PRO typically costs around $3,000.00 for a new AED. A used AED PRO may be significantly less, and other discounts may be available for non-profit organizations, or for-profit organizations buying in bulk.

How Often Should I Check My AED Plus?

The batteries and pads for an AED PRO are designed to last for 4 years (non-rechargeable battery), or  be “long-lasting but variable” (rechargeable battery). It's wise to check your AED on a regular schedule according to the manufacturers recommendations

Where Can I Buy the ZOLL AED PRO?

When I read the stories SCA survivors tell, I am struck by their intensity. They send strong emotional messages about their perspective on life after becoming victims of SCA, and most of them show newly gained determination to live the rest of their lives with awareness and intention. What they have to say reminds me of a few times in my own life when it seemed that life as I knew it might be taken from me. In these moments I was aware that, by some sudden event, the good life I was living was being threatened in a way that could change it forever, if not end it. These frightful life events stand out vividly in my memory, and at the same time strangely illuminate outstanding positive events in my life. So in some measure I think I understand what the SCA victim-survivor is experiencing after recovery. The intensity of surviving an SCA event has a powerful effect on a person. As a result, survivors have things to say that carry with them an important life lesson: “Live aware, and act wi...

Did you pack the AED?

“Hey, honey, did you pack the AED?” Now that I’m retired from my high school teaching career, I have more time on my hands. One of the things I look forward to, like most retiring professionals, is doing some traveling and enjoying the out of doors. To my delight, my son-in law and a friend just went in together and purchased a large jet-boat, sea-worthy for ocean fishing expeditions (there’s only one thing better than having a nice boat of your own—having a friend or relative with one!) As the oldster of the group that would be taking at least day-long trips with the guys, I spent some time talking with son-in-law about certain necessities that are especially important to the more mature, if you catch my drift. In addition to the most obvious unmentionable stuff, I also talked with him about what first aid equipment they had on board and offered to contribute to the boating adventure by shopping for and purchasing needed items. To start my effort I joined a boating forum and pos...

"Situational Awareness" Keeps us all Safer!

Where's the AED , and do I know how to use it? “ Situational Awareness ” can simply be defined as “knowing what is going on around us”. This awareness is demonstrated, for example, when a parent notices that the children’s toys are spread around the house and may cause Grandpa to trip. Or perhaps on the way to the grocery store a driver going through an intersection may notice another car coming from the crossroad that does not slow down and may well run its red light. An alert teacher keeping a keen ear can detect bullying in the school hallway by observing student posturing and listening closely to their comments. A team trainer may be at a sports event and from clear across a field or gym notice a young athlete suddenly drop to the floor, in need of immediate first aid.  In every circumstance, individuals who are not oblivious to their surroundings but who, though relaxed, are alert and prepared to act help keep us all safer. In light of the examples above, what kind of thinking...
