Defibtech Lifeline AED Review
Cost (lower is better): 1 / 5
Features: 7 / 10
Total cost of ownership (lower is better): 4 / 10
When purchasing an AED, especially for general use, it is well worth taking a look at the least expensive models. The question is, “Can a low cost AED help a lay bystander enough to save a victim of SCA?”
The answer is a definite YES! The Defibtech Lifeline AED is just such a machine, and it appears to be a winner. Costing about $1000 for a basic package when bought with currently offered discounts of $200 or more, these units should be considered by those seeking to equip a public setting or even their own home where a person with heart health issues lives.
Defibtech’s company background shows leadership and innovation in life-saving equipment such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs), mechanical chest compressors, and related accessories. They provide dependable, easy to use resuscitation equipment used by rescue professionals, hospital personnel, and public bystanders.
It is good to know that Defibtech has won numerous awards for its designs; their equipment is built to rigorous medical standards and demonstrates commitment to service excellence.
Defibtech's Lifeline AEDs show the same crucial specs as much more expensive units. Point to consider:
They are lightweight yet robust, meeting 1 meter "shock and drop" specifications.
The Lifeline AED is also nearly equal to the best machines in dust and water resistance, with an IP rating of 54.
They are also easily maintained and field upgradable, on-site, if and when CPR guidelines might change.
As well as the “Lifeline AED”, Defibtech’s product line includes the design award winning “Lifeline ARM”, an automated chest compression (ACC) device for the EMS pre-hospital market. The Lifeline ARM provides adult victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) consistent, continuous, deep-quality chest compressions associated with higher survival rates. Defibtech’s life-saving products are designed and built in the United States at state-of-the-art facilities in Guilford, Connecticut. USING THE DEFIBTECH LIFELINE AED
Here is a step-by-step description of deploying the “LIFELINE” in case of Sudden Cardiac Arrest:
Call 911 and have someone fetch the LIFELINE AED.
Begin CPR.
Set the LIFELINE AED down next to you by the victim’s head,
Press the green button, activating the unit.
Follow the step-by-step instructions as they are delivered (you will hear a clear, calm voice). -Remove all clothing from the victim’s chest; -Remove the pads from package in back of unit; -One at a time, peel each pad from the blue adhesive backing and place it on the victim’s chest as shown by large graphic drawing on each pad. --Follow the diagram on each pad when placing the pads; press firmly onto bare skin. --Move quickly but confidently–there is no need to rush.
Once both pads are attached to the victim's chest, take hands away, staying completely clear of the patient. If shock is indicated by audio instructions, press the flashing red “shock” button. The rescuer will be instructed exactly when to push the red shock button with the words: “Press flashing shock button”.
5. You hear: “shock delivered, it is safe to touch the patient, begin CPR”. Begin CPR again, adjusting your compressions to the metronome beat provided.
6. Guided CPR will continue for 2 minutes, then the machine will check again for any needed shock. Follow instructions carefully for cessation of CPR, and shock or no-shock needed prompt.
NOTE: CONTINUE CPR UNTIL EMS ARRIVES; FOLLOW ANY FURTHER AUDIO INSTRUCTIONS (e.g.: if further shock is needed).
PROFESSIONAL REVIEW
Defibtech makes great AED machines at very attractive prices. Just because these devices aren’t as expensive as their competition doesn’t mean they aren’t as good! One of the unique features of the Defibtech Lifeline AEDs is the use of a 9V battery for its routine self-checks, ensuring the AED battery is fully charged if it is needed for a rescue. The Lifeline AEDs also use LEDs instead of a less-vibrant LCD screen, which provide bright, clear visual guidance to reinforce voice instructions. Trust me, it can make a huge difference during a rescue! Reviewed by: Wes Wagoner EMT
