ZOLL AED 3 Review

The ZOLL AED 3 is the newest in the ZOLL line-up of AED Machines and comes in two forms, the 3 and 3BLS. These two newcomers are essentially updated forms of the ZOLL mainstays, the AED Plus and AED PRO, but are enhanced with new features. ZOLL AEDs are versatile, rugged, and have outstanding features which give guidance that is crucial to a successful rescue. As a result, neither AED is cheap, but still well worth considering for most any buyer, whether a lay user or a professional first responder.

“I was not expecting the AED to walk me through doing compressions.

I was sure thankful for that ‘press, press,press’.”

-Mark Tucker, Rescuer, CM Tucker Lumber in Pageland, SC

ZOLL AEDs have behind them a long history of development by the original experts in the field of electrical heart monitoring and stimulation for the purposes of defibrillation and pacing. ZOLL Medical, producer of ZOLL AEDs, was founded by Dr. Paul M. Zoll and associates in 1980. Zoll, while Chief of the Cardiac Clinic at Beth Israel Hospital in 1952, demonstrated that “external electrical stimulation of a patient's chest during cardiac arrest can produce an effective heartbeat.” His legacy continually grows with  ZOLL Medical’s continual research and development, improving performance and adding enhancements to existing products, as well as producing new technology.

Stepping up to the new ZOLL AED units (models AED 3 and AED 3BLS) adds another $100 to $200 to the purchase price compared to the original mainstay AED Plus and PRO units. However, the enhancements ZOLL has added to their AEDs appear to be well worth the relatively small added investment for the buyer.

The base ZOLL AED 3 is, of its two models, the one meant for the lay rescuer. Because of this intent, it comes with:

  • Automatic shock mode (semi-automatic feature is optional at no extra cost)
  • A straightforward screen (which, while outstanding in function with its “Real CPR Help” technology to aid the rescuer in providing first aid, provides less feedback and options which might confuse anyone but a trained professional).

ZOLL AED 3 Standout Features

Like their predecessors, the ZOLL AED 3 and 3 BLS both come with two standout features among AEDs in general, namely “Real CPR Help” and “One-piece CPR-D Padz”. The fact is, according to the American Heart Association, “CPR plus early defibrillation can more than double the rate of survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest” (2015 AHA Guidelines).

With this in mind, ZOLL made its AEDs to provide more assistance to those performing CPR than just giving an electric shock, stepping out ahead of the competition with the addition of its  “Real CPR Help” and “CPR-D Padz” technologies.

    newly enhanced with vivid rescue images

Health care professionals as well as lay responders benefit from assistance in knowing how often,how hard, and where to push to meet current guidelines for chest compression rate and depth. With deployment of the ZOLL AED 3, with its newly enhanced “Real CPR Help” technology, and placement of the “CPR-D-padz“, first-aiders know!

They are guided through quick and proper placement of the electrodes and shown where to give compressions, then given specific real-time feedback regarding proper rate and chest pressure for those compressions. Rescuers receive audio and visual feedback that guides them to deliver high-quality CPR. See the newly enhanced “Real CPR Help” technology in action in this online demo.

These features of ZOLL’s AEDs are enhanced in the new AED 3 BLS with:

ZOLL AED 3:

  • A full-color display including rescue images;

  • Cycle timer for CPR;

  • Large color gauge showing bar graph of CPR compression depth;

  • Extensive text and voice prompts;

  • Integrated pediatric rescue (push-button child mode and universal pads;

  • Wifi connectivity;

  • 8-second pre-shock analysis pause (reduces pauses during the rescue);

  • Increased shock resistance;

  • Comprehensive automatic self-tests (ensure device readiness)

  • Post-event support via ZOLL RescueNet® Code Review/CaseReview

  • 7-year warranty (5-year standard warranty plus 2 years with Registration).

ZOLL AED 3 BLS:

  • Monitor adds patient ECG and more extensive CPR Dashboard™ to features found on AED 3, including: compression rate and depth, a CPR cycle countdown timer, shock count, and total elapsed time readout.

  • 8-year warranty (6-year Standard Warranty plus 2 years with Registration).

Note that, like its predecessor AED PRO, The ZOLL AED 3BLS takes a step up toward professional (ALS) level functionality.  It too is among the best AEDs on the market, with high marks in every area. While on the high end when it comes to pricing, it is with good reason. These AEDs provide features that function at the level of many non-portable hospital devices. ZOLL-built versatility, ruggedness (IP 55 and 1 meter drop test), and outstanding features make it well worth considering for professional first responders.

ZOLL AED 3 Professional Reviews from the Web

“ZOLL defibrillators equipped with Real CPR Help— providing real-time feedback for depth and rate of chest compressions – combined with training – more than doubled the chance of survival from cardiac arrest.”

 –Bobrow B, et al. Annals of Emergency Medicine. July 2013; 62(1):47-56.31

ZOLL AED 3 RESCUE STORIES

“Are you feeling ok?” As she passed through the gaming room, Amy-Leigh Williams overheard one of the guests at Panania Diggers ask this of another. Recognizing the level of concern in the guest’s voice, Amy-Leigh’s instincts told her to grab the automated external defibrillator (AED) from the reception area. MORE

As the pool director at a local aquatic center for the past seven years, Julien Morel has come to expect quiet evenings watching swimmers train for events. Bernard Marie, an executive in a factory located in Puy en Valey, a small town in the Rhône Alps, had similar expectations as he attended his weekly swim training one evening when Julien was on duty. A seasoned athlete, Bernard hikes, jogs, and swims regularly. Unfortunately, neither Julien nor Bernard had the night they were expecting.  MORE

When I read the stories SCA survivors tell, I am struck by their intensity. They send strong emotional messages about their perspective on life after becoming victims of SCA, and most of them show newly gained determination to live the rest of their lives with awareness and intention. What they have to say reminds me of a few times in my own life when it seemed that life as I knew it might be taken from me. In these moments I was aware that, by some sudden event, the good life I was living was being threatened in a way that could change it forever, if not end it. These frightful life events stand out vividly in my memory, and at the same time strangely illuminate outstanding positive events in my life. So in some measure I think I understand what the SCA victim-survivor is experiencing after recovery. The intensity of surviving an SCA event has a powerful effect on a person. As a result, survivors have things to say that carry with them an important life lesson: “Live aware, and act wi...

Did you pack the AED?

“Hey, honey, did you pack the AED?” Now that I’m retired from my high school teaching career, I have more time on my hands. One of the things I look forward to, like most retiring professionals, is doing some traveling and enjoying the out of doors. To my delight, my son-in law and a friend just went in together and purchased a large jet-boat, sea-worthy for ocean fishing expeditions (there’s only one thing better than having a nice boat of your own—having a friend or relative with one!) As the oldster of the group that would be taking at least day-long trips with the guys, I spent some time talking with son-in-law about certain necessities that are especially important to the more mature, if you catch my drift. In addition to the most obvious unmentionable stuff, I also talked with him about what first aid equipment they had on board and offered to contribute to the boating adventure by shopping for and purchasing needed items. To start my effort I joined a boating forum and pos...

"Situational Awareness" Keeps us all Safer!

Where's the AED , and do I know how to use it? “ Situational Awareness ” can simply be defined as “knowing what is going on around us”. This awareness is demonstrated, for example, when a parent notices that the children’s toys are spread around the house and may cause Grandpa to trip. Or perhaps on the way to the grocery store a driver going through an intersection may notice another car coming from the crossroad that does not slow down and may well run its red light. An alert teacher keeping a keen ear can detect bullying in the school hallway by observing student posturing and listening closely to their comments. A team trainer may be at a sports event and from clear across a field or gym notice a young athlete suddenly drop to the floor, in need of immediate first aid.  In every circumstance, individuals who are not oblivious to their surroundings but who, though relaxed, are alert and prepared to act help keep us all safer. In light of the examples above, what kind of thinking...
