Philips: A #1 Medtech Company

From the start, Philips showed itself to be an innovative company out to make life better for the consumer. Originally a company generally focused on technology, in the past ten years it has zeroed in on health-related devices; in 2020 it became the #1 medtech company in Boston Consulting Group’s “Top 50 most innovative companies”.

The world over, Philips’ long-standing leadership in technology is now applied to the purpose of improving people’s health. Philips’ efforts have led to the rapid development of an outstanding variety of healthcare programs and products. Healthcare advances produced by Philips range from large-scale hospital monitoring and communication systems to even the smallest items, such as the elegantly simple yet intelligently designed ”toddler sippy cup”.

When it comes to AEDs, much research into the most effective methods for treating Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) has occurred since these machines were first invented. An example of their commitment to research and development is Philips’ introduction of the first biphasic waveform for an external defibrillator in 1996. Since then, biphasic therapy has gained acceptance and is now recognized as the standard of care. This research, coupled with current technological advancements in micro-electronics, has led to production of a variety of models.

Through its development of the previously reviewed Heartstart OnSite AED, Philips showed its interest in improving life for each individual. It made a unit uniquely designed for at-risk individuals who need to carry a personal AED. Relatively inexpensive, simple-to-use, and available “over-the-counter” (no prescription needed) its creation fit the bill for individuals and small group situations.

The Philips company then turned its sights to developing more rugged and versatile defibrillators. While still user-friendly for everyday rescue, these machines can be transported and used by trained responders in any high-risk setting. Thus development of Philips’ AED offerings took a step further with the more rugged, more fully-featured “FRx” defibrillator discussed in this review.

Using the Philips FRx AED

Here is a step-by-step description of deploying the “FRx” in case of Sudden Cardiac Arrest:

  1. Call 911 and have someone fetch the OnSite AED.

  2. Begin CPR.

  3. Set the FRx down next to you by the victim’s head, unzip its red case, and open the lid.

  4. Press the green button, activating the unit.

  5. Follow the step-by-step instructions as they are delivered (You will hear a clear, calm, male voice. Layered AED design prevents missteps and protects pads within the unit until they are needed.)
    • Remove all clothing from the victim’s chest;
    • Open the grey case and peel off white adhesive pads;
    • One at a time, separate each pad from its adhesive backing and place it on the victim’s chest as shown by large graphic drawing on each pad.
      • Follow the diagram on each pad when placing the pads; press firmly onto bare skin.
      • Move quickly but confidently–there is no need to rush–adaptive voice commands will adjust to your pace and repeat instructions as needed.

  6. Once both pads are attached to the victim's chest, take hands away, staying completely clear of the patient. If shock is indicated by audio instructions, press the flashing orange button. Rescuer will be instructed exactly when to push the orange shock button with the words: “Press the flashing orange button now”.

  7. You hear: “shock delivered, it is safe to touch the patient, begin CPR”. Begin CPR again, adjusting your compressions to the metronome beat provided.

Notes:

  1. IF ASSISTANCE WITH CPR IS NEEDED, PUSH THE FLASHING BLUE BUTTON FOR EXTRA GUIDANCE).

  2. CONTINUE CPR UNTIL EMS ARRIVES; FOLLOW ANY FURTHER AUDIO INSTRUCTIONS (e.g.: if further shock is needed).

Professional Review:

“The Philips HeartStart FRx device takes what is great about the Philips OnSite and builds on it. Not only is it easy to use and lightweight, it also adds some unique features, like the ability for the device to be used on an infant with the insertion of a key. This device can also be used as a training device, which will save money in the long run. The FRx is one of the most popular mid-tier devices on the market for good reason: high functionality and a robust feature set.”

Philips HeartStart FRx AED

We've had a Phillips HeartStart FRx installed at our Church for about 7 years now. Replace pads every two years and battery every four years. No problems and it's always ready to go. Haven't needed to use it so far.

A customer fainted in our business with never having done so before. He awoke before 911 was dispatched. In talking with him and others I learned that if the heart stops beating for only a few seconds fainting can occur. This incident got me to thinking that as a responsible business owner that we should be prepared in the event that we might have an opportunity to save a life. We purchased two units, one of which is business the other for home. Our neighbors have been informed that an AED is available to them as/if needed. PS: Our local fire department told me that they only carry Phillips AED's on all equipment.

When I read the stories SCA survivors tell, I am struck by their intensity. They send strong emotional messages about their perspective on life after becoming victims of SCA, and most of them show newly gained determination to live the rest of their lives with awareness and intention. What they have to say reminds me of a few times in my own life when it seemed that life as I knew it might be taken from me. In these moments I was aware that, by some sudden event, the good life I was living was being threatened in a way that could change it forever, if not end it. These frightful life events stand out vividly in my memory, and at the same time strangely illuminate outstanding positive events in my life. So in some measure I think I understand what the SCA victim-survivor is experiencing after recovery. The intensity of surviving an SCA event has a powerful effect on a person. As a result, survivors have things to say that carry with them an important life lesson: “Live aware, and act wi...

Did you pack the AED?

“Hey, honey, did you pack the AED?” Now that I’m retired from my high school teaching career, I have more time on my hands. One of the things I look forward to, like most retiring professionals, is doing some traveling and enjoying the out of doors. To my delight, my son-in law and a friend just went in together and purchased a large jet-boat, sea-worthy for ocean fishing expeditions (there’s only one thing better than having a nice boat of your own—having a friend or relative with one!) As the oldster of the group that would be taking at least day-long trips with the guys, I spent some time talking with son-in-law about certain necessities that are especially important to the more mature, if you catch my drift. In addition to the most obvious unmentionable stuff, I also talked with him about what first aid equipment they had on board and offered to contribute to the boating adventure by shopping for and purchasing needed items. To start my effort I joined a boating forum and pos...

"Situational Awareness" Keeps us all Safer!

Where's the AED , and do I know how to use it? “ Situational Awareness ” can simply be defined as “knowing what is going on around us”. This awareness is demonstrated, for example, when a parent notices that the children’s toys are spread around the house and may cause Grandpa to trip. Or perhaps on the way to the grocery store a driver going through an intersection may notice another car coming from the crossroad that does not slow down and may well run its red light. An alert teacher keeping a keen ear can detect bullying in the school hallway by observing student posturing and listening closely to their comments. A team trainer may be at a sports event and from clear across a field or gym notice a young athlete suddenly drop to the floor, in need of immediate first aid.  In every circumstance, individuals who are not oblivious to their surroundings but who, though relaxed, are alert and prepared to act help keep us all safer. In light of the examples above, what kind of thinking...
